Why your donations are so vital

An increasing number of people are living well beyond retirement age into their eighties and nineties and providing suitable accommodation and care for them is now of greater significance.

Not only do Almshouse charities provide accommodation for the elderly, however, but also for younger families, the disabled and specified trades and key workers, including retired fishermen and miners.

The majority of Almshouse charities have less than 20 dwellings and only a modest income with which to run the properties. 30% of the charities occupy listed buildings which inevitably are more expensive to maintain and modernise. This is why your help is so vital to us.

How your donations benefit almshouse charities and their residents

In 2013 the demand from members for interest free loans from the Rolling Fund increased on previous years and the Association made loans totalling 522,011. This year to date 16 member charities are planning improvement projects and have requested interest free loans amounting to 437,000.

The type of projects we have been supporting are general refurbishments, including re-roofing, new heating systems, improved disabled access, conversion of bedsitting rooms to flats, as well as building new almshouses.
