St Mary’s Hospital, Chichester

St Mary’s Hospital has existed on its present site since the end of the thirteenth century; not as part of a religious order but an independent Christian foundation.

Since the beginning of the twentieth century, members of the Dean and Chapter of Chichester Cathedral have been the Trustees of the hospital and its endowments, and the residential accommodation has been progressively improved and increased.  In 2018, four new independent trustees were appointed to bring specialist knowledge and experience to the Board.

Four cottages were converted into almshouses in 1905 and more recently, these have been converted into three flats and a guest room; in 1986 the building of St Mary’s Lodge provided a further twelve flats, and in 2003 St Mary’s Courtyard was completed on land to the north of the medieval building, providing a further six flats as well as a staff bedsit, office accommodation and a communal meeting room for residents.

  • be in sufficiently good health to cook and housekeep for themselves
  • be of good character
  • have resided for the five years preceding their application in an ecclesiastical parish in the Diocese of Chichester, any part of which is within 15 miles of the Cathedral Church of Chichester

The Charterhouse (Sutton’s Hospital in Charterhouse), Islington, London EC1

The Charterhouse was founded as an almshouse in 1611 and today continues to provide a range of accommodation from self-contained studio to one-bedroom flats. Residents live in beautiful surroundings, with shared gardens, and eat together in the Great Hall. The Charterhouse is situated very close to Barbican and Farringdon stations.

Whiteley Homes Trust – Walton on Thames, Surrey

At the heart of Whiteley Village, set out in an octagon around the monument to our founder, are our 262 one and two-bedroom almshouse cottages, suitable for single people and couples.

Their central location means that all are in easy reach of the multiple facilities, services, and social opportunities that our Village has to offer. The cottages are intended for those who are able to live independently. However, as residents’ needs change, our Support Team and Care at Home Teams we can offer care and support. This will enable them to remain in their home for as long as they are able and wish to.

Cottages are offered on an unfurnished basis and feature the following:
• Lounge (some of the larger cottages also have a dining area)
• Kitchen, including integrated oven & hob
• Shower and toilet
• Central heating and smoke alarms
• *A selection of cottages contain an oak dresser and other period features
* The dressers were originally made for each cottage on the instruction of William Whiteley. The oak wood was from the felled trees during the construction of the Village.

* Residents are responsible for arranging their own services and managing their contracts with providers.

The Village has a Property and Estates Team who can assist with maintenance and repairs.
In addition there is an out of hours emergency call-out service for emergency repairs and welfare support.

  • Age: Male of not less than 65 years and female of not less than 60 years, as stated in the Will of William Whiteley.
  • Capital Asset Limit: Capital assets do not exceed £30,000 per person (£60,000 asset limit for couples).
  • Annual Income: £17,534.40 the equivalent of the state pension per individual living within a property. Our recent policy change reflects that Villagers are allowed to work.
  • Residency Status and time lived in the UK: Applicants are subject to ‘Right to Rent’ checks and to have confirmed that they have lived in the UK 5 years prior to the application being made.
  • Engagement in a specific area: Priority to be given to individuals or the spouses of those who have been engaged in commercial or agricultural pursuits. This reflects William Whiteley’s intentions
