The Almshouse Association Awards

It is so important we recognise the vital role almshouses and almshouse charities play in today’s social structure and future affordable housing.

Many of you have such incredible sites and have been working hard to make improvements, increase the number of almshouses and improve the standard of almshouses available to local people in housing need. We encourage you to share your work with your peers and the wider public by partaking in the award process.

This year, The Almshouse Association is pleased to be able to present four different awards to distinguish and honour the many wonderful innovations taking place throughout our membership to benefit their almshouse residents.

THE AWARDS

This Award is for members who can demonstrate elements of:

  • Innovation in design
  • Exceptional planning
  • Quality of build
  • Value for money

For charities that can demonstrate a project has added significant value to a resident’s life, such as:

  • Garden model or ‘landscaping’ that encompasses a community feel
  • Garden projects that include residents’ participation
  • External projects that support residents’ mental well-being and physical health

For members who can demonstrate in their redevelopments or new builds:

  • Inter-generational living
  • Environmental considerations
  • Accessibility
  • Connection with community

Our esteemed Award, instituted by HRH The former Prince of Wales in 2000 to encourage and celebrate excellence in architectural and living standards that reflect the historic imprint of a building.

The award recipient is chosen by our Royal Patron for:

  •  Restoration, improvement or modernisation of existing almshouses that preserve the look and feel of the original building
  •  Acquisition and conversion of buildings to almshouses that are appropriate for the immediate landscape
  •  New developments aligned with the landscape
