We are a Grade1 listed Almshouse and one of our1 bedroom flats does not have a suitable fire escape. Because of the listing we are unable to accommodate the emergency exit and we are unable to use for residential purposes but paying council tax on this property. Has anyone been in this situation before as we seem to be getting nowhere withour local authority. We have approached the Valuation Office stating this is now a store room because of the emergency exit but they will not decommission it to ‘store’. Has anyone else experienced anything like this. Advice would be gratefully received.

We are trying to make a decision about one of our properties which has problems due to its size. It is historically hard to find someone who wants such a small property. It used to be an old bedsit and has been converted into a two roomed almshouse with a very small kitchen. We are anxious to find out how hard it would be change the use from almshouse to an office/store.
