Does anyone have any advice on your particular charity’s “storing and taking reasonable care of abandoned furniture and goods” in a property for three months after a resident has moved out and vacated? This would be totally impractical for most charities, and a property needs to be completely emptied by a departing resident, unless certain items have been agreed to be disposed of by the resident or their family fairly immediately after vacating.

You are right, storage is an issue and we have no room for this thus ee agree with the relatives that we will clear the property and then contract a house clearance company to remove all possessions which the family did not want.

Hello Catherine, when you say ‘abandoned’, has the resident left and asked you to store the items or are they no longer needed?
It ought to be the responsibility of the resident / their next of kin to empty the property.
If the resident has died, we usually make it clear to the family that they will continue to be charged until it is cleared, or mostly so.
We recommended house clearance, Emmaus, British Heart Foundation etc.
House clearance comes with a cost which the charity ought not to be responsible for.
If the goods have been abandoned, I suggest you notify the resident / family of a deadline by which it needs to be cleared or else it will be given away.

If the furniture is defintely abandonned- try free cycle, facebook market place or Olio.
