Our individual residents on benefits have received flyers advertising subsidised or free solar panels. As they are not tenants can they apply individually? Has anyone managed to get grants for solar panels and/ashp for their almshouses? The suppliers can’t tell us for sure whether we qualify and to pay up front and find that we don’t is not a risk we can afford to take.

    Thanks in advance

The buildings belong to the charity, not the beneficiaries occupying them for the time being. It’s up to you, I think, to make any decision to install solar panels or not.

They will no doubt cost you quite a bit, I doubt that you will get any subsidies for buying or fitting them, and, as the electricity consumers in question, your residents will end up getting any financial benefits the panels may provide.

We have just installed pv’s on our site with a 50% grant from our local council through a low carbon funding scheme. Grants are available and can also cover other items such as heat pumps. We also looked at other options with a local charity that installs panels at no cost and shares the return on payments for electricity sent to the national grid. The trustees decided to go for our own scheme as we had available funds but the alternative could be attractive for an almshouse with limited funds. You would need to consider how your units are supplied with electricity- if directly from the supplier the installations would be separate, each with an inverter so cost will be higher. Our flats are on a single supply with sub-meters to recover costs from each resident so a much simpler installation
