When the troubles started in Ukraine I think quite a few of us may have been asked to offer our Almshouses to the “refugees”. I wonder whether anybody had any policy on this. We are restricted by gov doc to local people so it did not come into our remit, however, we may now have an application from someone who has been resident in the village for 3 years and wondered if anybody had had any similar experience?

We don’t have a policy, but we have accepted Ukrainian refugees even if they have not lived in the area for long. Most are young families in our general needs housing, but we do have an elderly couple on a Warden supported site. They behave impeccably and look after their almshouses, but communication can be a problem.

    HI,

Our governing document states ‘except in special cases have resided in the borough’ etc… The Trustees considered an application to house an elderly Ukranian couple as a special case. We had an available property at the time and they are still happily living with us over 2 years later. (I use google translate to give them the same info as we give all our other residents – it works well, although the language barrier can be an issue, they are learning! I still cannot speak Ukranian).
