The Trustees are looking at creating a formal independent living policy (including a clear definition of independent living). As we know it is a very individual thing.
The Almshouses Association have really good guidance and suggest a policy but I cannot find a policy template. Does anyone have one we could base ours on please? Thank you, Anne

    Hello Anne,

This is an interesting subject. We do not have a separate policy on independent living, but just a mention in the residents handbook. However, AA runs a webinar on independent living on 14/05 where the experts can comment on creating a policy etc.

    Kind regards,
    Lana

I too would be interested to see a policy written by another Almshouse Charity (and avoid ‘reinventing the wheel’). Our residences are individual, rather than communal. Thanks

    Hi
We have a policy – which I’m happy to send to anyone that want it but interested to see what others have in their policy. I wonder if ours is too general/generic and need to be more specific.
We have a resident about to be discharged from hospital with a 4 times a day care visit. There has been not discussion had with us, just a ‘phone call to take delivery of a range of equipment including hospital bed.
Do you consider this to be independent living?

    Hello there

We implemented an independent living policy in 2024 which we are happy to share. We drew heavily on the content of the Standards of Almshouse Management to draft it. I will also contact the Guildhall Feoffment Trust to ask for theirs in order to improve ours. We too have had difficult situations in the last two years.. In one case a resident was returned from hospital without consultation with us. The resident was bed bound so unsafe as we have no warden to assist to escape in a fire (and of course the resident was not able to live independently). We worked over months with the council, the family and a solicitor and the council did eventually rehome the resident into a care home. In the other the resident sadly died in convalescent care while we were considering with a solicitor setting aside the appointment to prevent her return. That resident was also bed bound.
