Architectural merit

  1. Design
Any new build must be attractive and sit well in its surroundings.  The proportionality, quality and beauty of the building should be key factors.  Modernisation projects should fulfil the practical requirements while preserving and enhancing the architectural beauty of the building.  For Listed buildings the emphasis should be on achieving high standards of restoration and conservation balanced with the needs for the dwellings to be affordable and functional.
  1. Cost of Project
Trustees should be able to demonstrate that they have obtained value for money in designing and managing the project.
  1. New Technologies and Conservation
Trustees should be able to show that they have considered energy saving measures and new technologies as appropriate.  If possible, materials and workmanship should be sourced locally.
  1. Materials
Simple, robust and non-toxic materials should be used.  Wherever possible natural materials should be used – those which improve with age are preferred.
