Hi I would appreciate if any one could share their policy regarding grandchildren staying with their grandparent.

I know its school holidays and childcare is expensive, plus I do not wish to stop grandchildren staying but we have alot of children
currently on our site. Some of the residents have 2 or 3 each that they are looking after. It is not too bad on the odd occassion
but it seems t be getting to be everyday during the holidays. I also know that some are staying over without us being told which
is against our policy and fire safety regulations.

I am just looking to see how other chairities monitor this, we have 40 properties on this site and a very large lake/pool which is
    of a concern too.

I have spoken to all residents concerned and to explain my concerns to them but I would like to put something in writing to
them all folowing a meeting I have arranged with all residents regarding this matter. Other residents are complaining too about
it becoming more like a kindergarten.

Any comments woukd be greatly received thank you

    Hi

Yes we have the same issue although on a limited scale. Overnight stays are covered within our handbook which allows occasional stays and only after being authorised by the Trustees. So this aspect can be controlled.

We also include in our handbook a provision that residents must be mindful of others and not cause a nuisance. If you have had complaints then I assume a nuisance is being caused and if you have a similar wording in your handbook you can also manage this.

Maybe give a gentle warning? followed by a sterner letter if situation persists.

It should be pointed out that the health and safety of visiting children is the responsibility of the resident, and consider banning them from going anywhere near the water. You are quite right in stating that the Almshouses is not a kindergarten and your beneficiaries are your priority.

    Hello Angela

We don’t have a problem specifically with grandchildren, but the wording in our Residents’ Handbook covers all overnight guests, which would include grandchildren (or any children). In case it’s helpful, the wording in our Handbook is as follows:

    1. The Charity’s staff must be informed of any overnight guests for safety and security reasons.
    2. An occasional visit of up to seven nights by a relative or friend does not require prior permission from the General Manager. If you wish to have a guest stay for more than seven nights, prior permission must be sought from the General Manager.
    3. An application for any proposed extended visit must be made in writing and in advance to the General Manager, who will refer your request to the Secretary to determine the maximum period for such occupation and any other conditions.
4 . In all circumstances, visitors and overnight guests are expected to abide by the same rules which apply to residents and to respect the privacy of other residents during their visit.

    Kind regards
