Do other Almshouse Charities have a ceiling in terms of assets above which applicants would not be considered for an Almshouse? Not for the first time we are currently grappling with a choice of applicants and deciding who is most “in need”. We have considered setting a maximum figure of £150,000 as a guideline – I should explain that we are in Surrey with steep property prices!

    Dear Trevor

Property prices are also pretty steep in Salisbury, so we have set a capital limit of £150K which is based on the estimated cost of buying a one bedroom sheltered flat in the city. However, this doesn’t take into account the extremely high service charges in private sheltered accommodation…..
