Hi Jo
We have a medications policy that clearly distinguishes between assisting someone who is taking their own medication (fetching a packet, opening a stiff bottle, reading out instructions, fetching a glass of water) and prompting which are allowed, and administering for them (eg choosing, counting out/measuring, putting medication into a residents hand or mouth) which is absolutely not allowed. We try to emphasize where we can help to encourage independence (getting the devices that make eye drops easier, asking a pharmacy for dosset boxes etc) whilst being very clear about when we can’t.
We’ve just drafted an independent living policy so I’d be interested to see your one and happy to share ours. clarescottbooth@sheppardtrust.org if you want to be in touch.
It took me a while to get embedded especially where residents ask for help with a topical cream, but we have got there in the end!
