Welcome Elizabeth Fathi!

“We are delighted to have Elizabeth as our first honorary member of The Friends of Club. She will be a supportive addition to this new club. Her expansive knowledge of the almshouse movement will be an amazing asset to everyone involved in the Friends of Club.” Nick Phillips, CEO of The Almshouse Association

We are pleased to announce that our former Chair of the Board of Trustees for The Almshouse Association, Elizabeth Fathi, has become the 1st Member of our new Friends of Club.  Elizabeth was presented with her certificate at Members Day 2023  by our CEO, Nick Phillips.

“I am honoured (and very excited) to be the first Friend of The Almshouse Association.  Please do join me so that we can become a strong group and a powerful voice for almshouses and the almshouse movement.

My 001 Certificate, presented to me at the Members Day in June, was a wonderful surprise and an inspired idea.  I have already had a reservation for the 007 certificate (Chris, you know who you are!) so the group has quickly doubled in size and I am very much hoping that everyone (and I mean everyone) interested in almshouses will join up.  It’s very easy to register and all you need to bring with you is enthusiasm and joy for this very special form of charitable housing.

We need to shout from the rooftops that this 1000-year-old social housing model is as strong today as it ever was and is fit for purpose. In fact, it illuminates the way forward as an important and unique player in the drive to address this country’s housing crisis.  Almshouses really do reach those parts of the town and country that the larger providers find difficult.  They need scale.  We do not.  Our place in the jigsaw is a colourful, confident, and comfortable one, embracing and creating community, belonging, charitable spirit, localism and well-being. A bright future built on a deep-rooted and rich legacy.

I look forward to being part of a new chapter in the Association’s work and very much hope you will too.  I look forward to meeting you at a Friends of event soon! ” Elizabeth Fathi
