Ossulton Court almshouses, Uxbridge United Welfare Trust

A new case study published by the Housing Learning and Improvement Network (Housing LIN) explores how Uxbridge United Welfare Trust in Uxbridge is reinterpreting the traditional almshouse for modern later-life living.

Completed in 2022, the award-winning Ossulton Court development provides 30 accessible apartments, combining the enduring values of almshouse living with thoughtful contemporary design, attractive communal spaces and opportunities for residents to enjoy both independence and community life.

A demonstration of how traditional almshouse principles can continue to inspire innovative housing for older people.

Written by Stephen Melvin of Atelier Architecture & Design, the case study examines how the development has transformed a challenging site into a welcoming place to live, combining the social principles of the almshouse with HAPPI-informed design, arranging accessible, dual-aspect homes around a landscaped courtyard and sheltered cloister.
