Standards of Almshouse Management 2025 (SAM) has been produced by The Almshouse Association, in collaboration with professional experts where appropriate, as an essential guide to assist the trustees and clerks of its member charities in the day to day governance and administration of their almshouses.
Rising aspirations, better living standards, an ageing population and the need for high standards of accommodation to enable independent living have led to the almshouse movement becoming increasingly important. Standards of Almshouse Management is, therefore, intended to be an overview of best practice and a further step towards raising of standards in almshouses in order that residents may live in warm, comfortable homes that are safe and secure.
The complexity of ever increasing legislation and regulation means that manuals such as this are of growing importance both in creating awareness of the relevant issues for charities and assisting them through the various processes. Those involved in almshouse charities, in whatever capacity, need to be kept up to date with changes as they occur and every effort has been made to ensure that the information contained in the following pages is current and relevant at the time of publication.
This guidance manual contains 16 chapters, each with links to additional information, model policies, and templates available on The Almshouse Association website, as well as specialist resources on external sites.
