    Hello
I was wondering what you usually do once the resident has gone into care but the family is yet to empty the flat. Do you charge WMC to the family or do you just let it be?
Benefits stopped from the date the resident went to a care home and the local authority is claiming some back from us.

    Thank you

We ask for four weeks’ notice. I reduce it if necessary when a resident has passed away. It doesn’t always work, but it does concentrate the family’s minds on clearing the almshouse!

Invoice the family for the wmc as soon as you can/ or speak to the family

We point out that WMC is payable until the flat is emptied and keys handed back and we have a 4 weeks notice policy.

However, we take individual circumstances into account and are mindful of the often difficult and stressful time the relatives might be having and are flexible. We have found that being upfront as soon as possible is often helpful to the relatives who just need to know what they need to do and in most cases have been grateful to be told. This has, in more cases than not, resulted in the flat being handed back quite quickly and the WMC being paid.
