It seems that my edit didn’t go through so I’ll have to post another comment. Here are the questions we ask (so you don’t have to read through our entire interview document):

1. What is the applicant’s reason for wanting to move?
2. What is the applicant’s understanding of living in an almshouse?
3. Does the applicant have any current home care arrangements (e.g. meals on wheels, carers)? Are these by private arrangement or social services?
4. Health – are there any medical conditions that the applicant would like to make known?
5. Does the applicant have any family or next-of-kin, and do they live nearby?
6. Does the applicant receive support from family and/or friends?
7. What date does the applicant wish to take up residency if accepted? Do they have to give notice?

We don’t use guarantors either, although we do ask for references; based on the financial information that the applicant provides in the initial application form, we consider if they would be able to afford the WMC before accepting onto our waiting list.

We started a new build last year and the majority of funding came from our own reserves (about 3/4 of the total), but we also received a £100,000 loan from The Almshouse Association. We also received smaller grants from the Quaker Housing Trust and the Garfield Weston Foundation.
